Chinese police has reportedly arrested five people after a 17-year-old boy sold his kidney to buy an Apple iPhone and iPad. The boy, identified by his surname Wang, is said to have received about 3,000 dollars for his kidney.
Those detained include Song Zhongyu, a surgeon from a provincial hospital in Yunnan province, who conducted the kidney transplant and other conspirators He Wei, Yin Shen, Tang Shimin, Su Kaizong who were all involved in this illegal trading, reported the government-run Xinhua news agency.
The surgeon received about 220,000 yuan (£22,000) for the transplant but gave just 22,000 yuan(£2,200) to the 17-year-old boy identified by his surname Wang.Wang confessed to his mother that he sold one of his kidneys when questioned how he got money for a new iPhone and iPad.
Apple products are hugely popular in China, but are priced beyond the reach of many Chinese. IPhones start at 3,988 yuan ($ 633), and iPads begin at 2,988 yuan ($ 474). Last year a 17-year-old Chinese student from Huaishan City sold his kidney to buy iPad-II. The boys were attracted by kidney traders though online chatrooms.
Illegal organ trade is believed to be rife in China due to the gap between the number of transplants performed per year (approximately 10,000) compared to the number of people who require transplants (believed to be in the region of 1.5 million people).
International human rights groups have long accused China of harvesting organs from executed prisoners for transplant without the consent of the prisoner or their family -- charges the government has denied.
