“BARBIE”…. this pretty iconic doll always had countless hours of little girl's attention. Barbie has always been a make or believe kind of inspiration for a little girl’s dreams for the future. Birth of the “BARBIE DOLL”:
Barbie a fashion doll manufactured by American Toy Company namely Mattel was born on March 9th in the year 1959. It has been an important part of the toy fashion market for 50 years and has been the subject of numerous controversies and lawsuits.
Ruth Handler an American businesswomen is the founder of this sensational creation. Ruth Handler watched her daughter playing with paper doll and could notice that the little girl enjoyed giving them adult roles. And that’s how she was inspired to create an adult doll for the little girls.
Later on in 1956 Ruth went on a trip to Europe with her family where she came across a German toy doll namely Bild Lili, which was exactly what handler wanted, she was a doll that stood as an inspiration for Ruth Handler to design the BARBIE DOLL.
Bild Lili was a pretty fashion doll made in 1955, she was a doll created based on a popular character appearing in a comic strip which was created by Reinhard Beuthin for the news paper Die Bild- Zeitung. The production of Bild Lili was stopped after Mattel acquired the rights of the doll in 1964.
Ruth Handler then started with her idea of creating an adult doll and with the help of technicians and engineers at Mattel she designed the doll. She wanted her doll to be a fashionista for which she even hired Charlotte Johnson a well known fashion designer who would design Barbie’s wardrobe. The doll created by Ruth was given the name “Barbie” after Ruth Handlers daughter Barbara. However the patent was obtained in 1958.
BARBIE in the LIMELIGHT:
Barbie came into the limelight at the American International Toy Fare in New York on March 9, 1959 and for that reason this day is celebrated as Barbie’s official birthday. The first Barbie doll wore a black and white zebra striped swim suit with a topknot ponytail, open toed shoes, sunglasses, and earrings.
Barbie dolls are made with vinyl and porcelain which gave a soft feel finishing to the doll. And Barbie’s hair is usually made of the synthetic fiber. The doll was also available as either a blonde or brunette. Barbie the 11 ½ inches tall, long limbed, shapely, and beautiful doll was marketed as a “Teenage Fashion Model”.
The first doll was sold for $3 with the additional clothing costing from $1 to $5 depending on the variations of the designs. The Barbie dolls were first manufactured in Japan. Mattel made its mark in the market with its most fashionable creation Barbie by selling around 350,000 doll’s in the very first year of its production.
Although research shows that Ruth Handlers idea behind the creation of the so called adult doll Barbie for their little ones was not really appreciated by some parents, they were not happy with the doll’s appearance and its figure. And since then Barbie’s appearance has undergone lot of changes with accordance to the changing trends over the years.
Barbie’s dolls TV commercial:
Barbie was the first doll that was marketed through television in the 1960’s. It’s the first toy commercial ever advertised through television media. And since then till date there has been immense growth in the sales, estimates have it that three Barbie dolls are sold every second. Barbie has been sold in more than 150 countries worldwide. The best selling Barbie ever was the “Totally Hair Barbie” of the 1992 which had a long hair from head to toe.
Barbie’s Family, Career…..
Barbie is not just a fashion doll she has a family like every normal teenager including parents, siblings, cousins, friends and a boy friend namely “Ken” each doing their bit in the toy market. She even went to school. This is yet another innovative and unique strategy made by Mattel to exist in the long run.
Barbie does have pets which include dogs, cats, zebra, lion cub, horses, a panda, elephant, dolphin, peacock etc. It is estimated that barbie has around 40 pets. And that’s how Barbie is vividly different from any other toy with a real life like instances, relationships, careers etc.
Barbie was firstly introduced as a fashion doll with the “Teenage Innocence” but as time passed she took up many convincing professional roles which include airhostess, dentist, doctor, firefighter, police officer, entrepreneur, fashionista, athlete, UNICEF volunteer and astronaut etc. It is been estimated that barbie has more than 125 different careers.
