Movie Name - The Rum Diary
Running time: 2 hours
Rated: R
Directed by: Bruce Robinson
Starring: Johnny Depp,
Aaron Eckhart,
Giovanni Ribisi.
Director: Bruce Robinson

Plot : Based on the debut novel by Hunter S. Thompson. Tiring of the noise and madness of New York and the crushing conventions of late Eisenhower-era America, Paul Kemp (Johnny Depp) travels to the pristine island of Puerto Rico to write for a local newspaper, run by downtrodden editor Lotterman (Richard Jenkins). Adopting the rum-soaked life of the island, Paul soon becomes obsessed with Chenault (Amber Heard), the wildly attractive Connecticut-born fiancée of Sanderson (Aaron Eckhart). Sanderson is one of a growing number of American entrepreneurs who are determined to convert Puerto Rico into a capitalist paradise in service of the wealthy. When Kemp is recruited by Sanderson to write favorably about his latest unsavory scheme, the journalist is presented with a choice: to use his words for the corrupt businessmen's financial benefit, or use them to take the bastards down.
What we have is a jaunty, aimless series of mini-adventures about boozed-soaked writers in Puerto Rico in 1960 — a promising subject, to be sure, but one needs some focus and discipline to make it work on the screen.
In every move, Depp makes you believe this was a passion project for the actor, one he dedicates to Thompson
the movie version of “The Rum Diary’’ is more interested in idealism than entropy. The film will also earn fans, though it is spotty and inconsistent, but for what is being billed as a “crime drama,” there aren’t a lot of surprises . The cinematography is beautiful ,As far as acting is concerned- Skillfully acted but lacking in plot points.

final verdict - This 'Rum' lacks the punch it should have had.

The three were the best of friends since school but “Love, Corruption and Ambition” combine together to bring differences between them. As you must have guessed it, both love the same girl and therein lies the main problem .
Not getting into the details , we try to focus on the positives and negatives in the book,

Positives -

1. The language, incidentally, functional and capable of getting across its point

2. Relevance in today's times

3. Addresses corruption as a matter-of-fact way to do business in India.

Negatives -

1. Very Predictable

2. It is dramatic

3. idealistic without the backing of reason

4. Bollywood - ish in nature

Battlefield 3 - game review

Review for xbox gamers . No spoilers

Battlefield 3 - Release Date: October 25, 2011(360, PS3, PC)
Genre: Shooter

If you're not going online, there really isn't enough to recommend this game. The multiplayer stands as a game on its own and is the absolute reason to pick up Battlefield 3 . On Xbox 360 Battlefield 3 comes packaged with two discs, the second of which includes the single player campaign only. The first disc includes the hyped multiplayer and co-op missions and the high definition texture pack.

campaign is slower paced and requires a far more conservative style of play. DICE has struck a nice balance that allows the levels to feel massive, but still manages to ensure that players come into contact regularly enough for there to be a decent amount of action.Online BF3 on consoles is limited to 24-player matches as opposed to the PC's 64.
The game looks amazing in some of its daytime game play. The daytime lighting is some of the most impressive out there, and it's an extremely important part of the gameplay as well. The game by no means looks bad. It certainly keeps up with the technology today and while it is still remniscent of Battlefield: Bad Company 2 in some aspects, DICE seemed to up the ante with more photo-realism and less of the almost cartoonish style found in the Bad Company series. However, a game's graphics are more than the sum of their parts. There are notable graphical flaws that can't be conveyed through screenshots, and these sometimes interfere with gameplay.
the question everyone wants to know the answer to is - will bf3 outperform call of duty franchise ?
It fairly stands a good chance ,but with a disappointing campaign mode and minor graphical glitches ,i would have to say call of duty still is the king

Rating for Battlefield 3 (on scale of 10 )

Graphics - 10

Sound - 9

Gameplay - 7.5

Presentation - 8

Overall - 8.5

5. Sugar-free chewing gums bad for teeth
According to research, some sugar-free gums can contain acidic additives - usually fruit flavourings - which can attack enamel and pose a high risk of damaging teeth, reports the Daily Express."The term sugar-free may generate false security because people automatically believe such products are safe on teeth.
The study has been published in the British Dental Journal.

4.Lust for food
Fascination for food is the new cultural highpoint. According to Krishnendu Ray, an assistant professor of nutrition and food studies at New York University, "This is a sign that people are talking and thinking more about food. When we watch people cooking, it becomes a public discussion and part of culture. Food matters. Now, everyone wants to learn the art of cooking. Says psychiatrist Deepak Raheja, "It triggers our senses.cooking shows began as a recipe sharing platform but are now indicators of evolving cultural and culinary tastes.
Food, it seems, is just turning into a spectator sport. The dish just turned out right!

3.No Link Between Cell Phone Use and Cancer
The study was conducted in Denmark, a country that's unique because it keeps extraordinary health records on its residents. It's published in the journal BMJ.Researchers used the country's detailed databases to find out if adults with cell phone contracts before 1995 got brain tumors more frequently that those who didn't subscribe to mobile services. So, Cell Phones Safe or Not? Federal health agencies, including the FDA, CDC, and National Cancer Institute, have stated that the balance of the evidence shows that cell phones probably don't cause any health problems. But because so many people use them -- more than 87% of the U.S. population had a mobile phone in 2008 -- these agencies also agree that more research is needed.

2.Study shows humans still evolving
A new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences provides evidence of human evolution and rapid genetic changes suggesting that, contrary to modern claims, technological and cultural advancements have not halted the evolutionary process in humans. It is often claimed that modern humans have stopped evolving because cultural and technological advancements have annihilated natural selection. In contrast, recent studies show that selection can be strong in contemporary populations. However, detecting a response to selection is particularly challenging; results show that microevolution can be detectable over relatively few generations in humans and underscore the need for studies of human demography and reproductive ecology to consider the role of evolutionary processes.

1.Video games Will Totally Blow Your Mind
the Sun has reported on statements given by Baroness Susan Greenfield, a Professor of Synaptic Pharmacology at Lincoln College, Oxford, regarding the effects of computer games on the brains of children. The baroness stated, “Screen technologies cause high arousal which in turn activates the brain system’s underlying addiction. This results in the attraction of yet more screen-based activity.”Furthermore, she insisted that connections in the brain “can be temporarily disabled by activities with a strong sensory content — ‘blowing the mind’. Or they can be inactivated permanently by degeneration — ie. dementia.”

Movie Name : Margin Call
Run Time : 1 hr. 49 min.
Directed By: J.C. Chandor
Written By: J.C. Chandor

Cast : Kevin Spacey,
Jeremy Irons,
Penn Badgley,
Paul Bettany,
Zachary Quinto,
Simon Baker,
Demi Moore ,
Stanley Tucci.
Rated : R

PLOT- Set in the high-stakes world of the financial industry, Margin Call is an entangling thriller involving the key players at an investment firm during one perilous 24-hour period in the early stages of the 2008 financial crisis. When an entry-level analyst unlocks information that could prove to be the downfall of the firm, a roller-coaster ride ensues as decisions both financial and moral catapult the lives of all involved to the brink of disaster.

If you want to witness an acting clinic put on by an incredibly talented ensemble cast, look no further,J.C. Chandor's take on the beginnings of the 2008 financial crisis. Its one of those brilliantly acted movie that you wouldn't want to miss . It's makes an impressive debut with a theatrically bound drama about the 2008 collapse of a big financial firm that follows a trajectory similar to Bear Stearns' meltdown—an event that signaled America’s second Depression.
The ensemble cast is as good as it gets, they are uniformly splendid, offering considerable roles with cleanly defined personalities. Screen time for some is limited, but every face makes an impact, especially Tucci as the dejected numbers wizard fired before the pandemonium
It’s not a solid picture, but “Margin Call” successfully seizes a mood of dread, perpetrated by our old friends: greed, power, and self-preservation.A must watch for everyone .
On the Movie scale of 1 to 10, “Margin Call” is an intriguing 9 . It sees its characters not as villains but, simply, as business people - with all that means.

But a 10-year race deal has been granted, during which period that outlay will be recouped, while the sheen of Formula One brings with it many intangible benefits such as national prestige and global exposure.According to experts, the benefits of a booming economy like India joining the F1 calendar are clear. Not only would the hotel and tourism industry get an immediate boost, the country's profile, too, would get a lift.
Experts are also of the view that once the Indian Grand Prix kicks off, it has the potential to generate around $170 million in revenue and employ as many as 10,000 people. The opportunity in advertising tie-ups between manufacturers and F1 cannot be overlooked either

Movie Name : Paranormal Activity 3 (2011)
Director : Ariel Schulman, Henry Joost
Screenwriter : Christopher Landon
Producer : Oren Peli, Jason Blum
Genre : Horror
Cast: Lauren Bittner,
Christopher Nicholas Smith,
 Chloe Csengery,
 Jessica Tyler Brown.

The Paranormal Activity franchise continues with this third outing from Paramount Pictures. Oren Peli and Jason Blum return to produce the highly secretive feature, with Catfish's directing duo of Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman taking on the helming duties . Directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman seem to realise that when a horror franchise reaches part three you'd best up the ante. So PA3's second half has genuinely eye-opening frights and twists and surprises.
Paranormal activity goes back in time this year , We finally get some answers for why Katie (Katie Featherston) and her sister Kristi (Sprague Grayden), seen briefly as adults in a dots-connecting prologue, first fell prey to a nocturnal demon that won’t leave them or their families alone. The plot, what there is of it, finds a cache of old VHS tapes, circa 1988, purporting to show what happened to the frightened Rey family, led by wedding videographer dad Dennis (Smith) and mom Julie (Bittner), who begin to experience odd goings-on after youngest daughter Kristi (Brown) starts chatting up her "invisible friend" Toby. Things go to hell from there, literally.
Series creator Oren Peli and his conscripts have managed to do it again, but you have to wonder how far they can continue to push this found-footage angle. The best jolts come courtesy of a camera rigged up to a rotating fan. But the freshness of the first film has faded somewhat, as has a degree of terror. The filmmakers fall back on well-trodden and rather silly territory involving a creepy witches' coven.

Rated R, a little sexuality, some harsh profanity, general scariness and stuff

Power of influence with "12 angry men "

                            SUNDAY SPECIAL ARTICLE

This article is inspired by the movie 12 Angry Men (1957) and will have references towards many of incidents that took place in the movie .

                              "12 angry men case study"

Firstly "12 angry men" is an absolutely boiling drama that has stood the test of time, and goes to show that great cinema thrives under limitations.Made in 1957 (i am pretty sure MOST of us didn't see the light of the day by then )with actions as simple as frowns and glances, a war wages in this single room that captivates the viewer, with compelling moral, logical arguments and severe emotional consequences. Every character is challenged, so that everyone in the audience is challenged. You will question yourself, your prejudices, and your approach to justice. The screenplay almost guarantees that.
A film that is as inspiring as it is well-crafted behind the scenes. The story is a simple one: 12 jurors are asked to decide the fate of a young man who is accused of killing his father. If guilty, he will be sentenced to the electric chair. Otherwise he goes free. The evidence is overwhelmingly against him: Two eyewitnesses, a murder weapon known to be bought by the killer, and an alibi that he couldn't remember during questioning. Open and shut, but one juror stands alone against the other 11. so i presume it is clear now that we are talking about a single man standing against the rest of the 11 who seems to have a different opinion .Throughout the film this one juror, played by Henry Fonda, speaks his mind in a very non-confrontational way.
Power is described in our text as “the ability to influence, command, or apply force; a measure of a person’s potential to get other to do what he or she wants them to do, as well as to avoid being forced by others to do what he or she does not want to do”.Successful executives know that getting the results they want requires leadership skills and the ability to influence people. Leaders in almost any role, from parent to board member to CEO, can find themselves ineffective and frustrated if they become less influential .

Factors that will help the minority group to make an influence

- CONSISTENCY
Hendry Fonda, the leader of the minority opinion, always remained consistent in his opposition to the majority. In other words, he never hesitated or wavered, but always stood firm on his ground. This makes people think more deeply about the issue. Other people probably make the attribution—as Joseph Sweeney did (the old man) that if a person is willing to stand up against the entire group and face ridicule, then he must have some important points to make. So this kind of consistency against the majority can lead others to augment their faith in the minority’s beliefs. The behaviour of individuals in any large dynamic group naturally exhibits various signs of either conscious or subconscious conformity. The psychological principle of conformity which related to social influence basically refers to an exertion on the will of the affected individual to act in a manner that is not in accordance with one's actual beliefs

- SELF-CONFIDENCE

Fonda(the leader of the minority opinion) was clearly self-confident. He had complete conviction in what he was doing and saying which instilled confidence in other members of the jury who were leaning in that direction.

- NO JUDGEMENT

The leader of the minority never judged the people in the majority group but all he tried to say is "what if" or "may be if this is what could have happened" . He was politely trying to gain the interest of the group, but at the same time not offending them in any way by passing a wrong judgment .

- AVOID APPEARING RIGID
one can be persistent in what he believes but listening to the argument of the others and tactically thinking through the problem to find an optimum solution is one of those things a communicator has to keep in mind while trying to influence his audience.

- PERSUASION
“What’s tricky about persuasion—and it’s this point that 12 Angry Men clarifies so thrillingly—is discerning the difference between getting others to think as you do . So the leader of the minority is cautious from the get-go. Whenever he’s asked if he thinks the kid is guilty, he constantly answers “I don’t know. It’s possible”. This may actually be what he’s thinking at the time, but it’s more likely he knows that he can’t box people into a corner by telling them what to do . all he try to do is explain an issue by simplifying it into pieces and help the rest of them to understand the issue in the way he thinks it is right and persuade them to make a decision which he knows would be in his favor

DEFLECTIONS FROM THE MAJORITY-
If the minority can get a few people to defect to their side,it creates a situation in which more and more people will change their opinion. This helps puncture a hole in the illusion of unanimity and loosens the pressure to conform . its more likely that people will widen their scope and try to look at the bigger picture .

Perhaps the greatest merit of "12 Angry Men" is the manner in which it shows us the numerous ways in which we can fail morally: through the inability or unwillingness to think clearly, self-centeredness, failure to notice what later seems all too obvious . It also shows that influencing a group of people can be achieved by strong persistence and belief in one's self

Movie Name :The Thing
Release Date: 13/10/2011
Runtime: 103 minutes
 Cast: Mary Elizabeth Winstead
Joel Edgerton
Ulrich Thomsen
Eric Christian Olsen
Director: Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.
Rated: R (for strong violence and gore, disturbing images, and language)

Plot : Paleontologist Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) has traveled to the desolate region for the expedition of her lifetime. Joining a Norwegian scientific team that has stumbled across an extraterrestrial ship buried in the ice, she discovers an organism that seems to have died in the crash eons ago. But it is about to wake up. When a simple experiment frees the alien from its frozen prison,Kate must join the crew's pilot, Carter (Joel Edgerton), to keep it from killing them off one at a time. And in this vast, intense land, a parasite that can mimic anything it touches will pit human against human as it tries to survive and flourish. The Thing serves as a prelude to John Carpenter's classic 1982 film of the same name.

Even if you've never seen John Carpenter's original, you know how the new version of The Thing is going to end. Movies featuring a lot of people trapped in a remote location with a destructive force tend to all end the same way
Minor quibbles aside , "The Thing" enraptures and impresses as one of the better mainstream horror releases of the year. "The Thing" is a special-effects extravaganza with all kinds of gross transformations and combinations of part-human, part-alien monstrosities scurrying around the facility.

Final verdict - worth a watch , I enjoyed The Thing as it played out and I recommend seeing it for those who're curious, but I don't think it will stand up to the classic .

Movie Name : - Footloose
Running time: 1 hour 53 mins
Movie Release Date: - October 14, 2011
Rated: PG 13
Starring: Kenny Wormald,
Julianne Hough and
Dennis Quaid
Director: Craig Brewer

Plot - Ren MacCormack (Kenny Wormald) is transplanted from Boston to the small southern town of Bomont where he experiences a heavy dose of culture shock. A few years prior, the community was rocked by a tragic accident that killed five teenagers after a night out and Bomont's local councilmen and the beloved Reverend Shaw Moore (Dennis Quaid) responded by implementing ordinances that prohibit loud music and dancing. Not one to bow to the status quo, Ren challenges the ban, revitalizing the town and falling in love with the minister's troubled daughter Ariel (Julianne Hough) in the process

This is a pretty good remake of Footloose: good-hearted, sincere, enjoyable, not too stupid. If it's not Brewer's most indelible portrait of the South, maybe it's not such a bad way to bring him back into the studio-filmmaking fold.Footloose has a message to community activism rather than youth rebellion. Instead of dropping out and forming a biker gang, our clean-living hero petitions the town council with a well-constructed argument. He's a rebel with a cause, and he's prepared to go through the correct channels to justify it.
Director (Craig Brewer) has managed to update the story well while still keeping the familiar. Ren’s VW bug. His “angry” dance at the mill. Even that awful maroon tuxedo jacket. But he also gives the film an energy the first film didn’t have. One place where the old "Footloose" has it over the newer version is in the emotional quality of the acting, even though, as directed by the late Herb Ross (who gets a shout-out in the closing credits) the first film was hardly a dramatic landmark.
“Footloose” pretty much delivers the goods. Younger viewers will respond to its message that youth needs to be free to dance without having to think whether they need to be free to do much of anything else.

Final verdict - A teen dance movie - it offers a mild diversion for those who still believe “the music is on their side.” - very much enjoyable.

Plot - The hot-headed young D'Artagnan (Logan Lerman) joins forces with three rogue Musketeers (Matthew MacFadyen, Luke Evans and Ray Stevenson) in this reboot of Alexandre Dumas' story. They must stop the evil Richlieu (Christoph Waltz) and face off with Buckingham (Orlando Bloom) and the treacherous Milady (Milla Jovovich).
This steampunk-styled take on Alexandre Dumas's swashbuckling tale may disappoint those expecting fidelity to the original classic. The open-minded, however, will enjoy the outrageous liberties taken with the story.Script writers Alex Litvak and Andrew Davies haven’t settled on what their film’s actually about, and the Musketeers themselves are lost in the noise .its one of those leave your brains at home movie .
A movie doesn't have to be realistic for me but it has to make sense in his own universe of the movie. The three musketeers plays with the rules of physics, logic and sense of a human being like they were beanbags. 3D is useless, but thats nothing new tell me a movie that really had to have 3D except for avatar or maybe tron.

Final verdict - messy ,THE REEL LOWDOWN - if you can enjoy a pointless excuse of a story for some nice swordplay, have fun

Did you know this…??

This article showcases some of the interesting facts about “COFFEE”…!!!
As they say…
Sunshine, coffee and a day off…what could be better :)

What is COFFEE ??
What is this plant that provides everything from a morning pick-me-up to a warming cocktail?
Coffee is a brewed beverage with a dark, slightly acidic flavor prepared from the roasted seeds of the coffee plant, colloquially called coffee beans. Botanically, coffee is classified in the Rubiacee family, which makes it somewhat of a cousin to the gardenia. The coffee bush produces clusters of sweet-scented white flowers, which eventually become a red berry that looks a great deal like a large cherry. Inside that cherry are the two seeds, or coffee beans. The coffee berries are harvested by hand and the seeds are extracted. The seeds are then roasted and ground.
There are dozens of species of coffee, most growing wild in subtropical areas. There are far fewer species cultivated commercially, only about 10 varieties, and these can be broken down into two major groups -Arabica and Robusta. The trees can live as long as 20 - 30 years and are capable of growing in a wide range of climates, as long as there is no harsh fluctuation in temperature. Optimally, they prefer a rich soil and mild temperatures, with frequent rain and shaded sun.

History of coffee…
Legend has it that the stimulant properties of coffee were discovered sometime before the ninth century by an Abyssinian goatherd named Kaldi, the young man's goats began snacking on coffee cherries while he napped nearby. Kaldi soon determined that it was the bright red cherries on the shrub that were causing the peculiar euphoria and after trying the cherries himself, he learned of their powerful effect. The stimulating effect was then exploited by monks at a local monastery to stay awake during extended hours of prayer and distributed to other monasteries around the world.
According to some historians, the Arabica shrub was taken to Southern Arabia for cultivation sometime before the year 600 AD, though the Arabs didn’t learn how to brew the hot beverage until the ninth or tenth century. The word “coffee”, by the way, comes to us either from the Arabic word “qahwah”, or from “Kaffa”, a province in Ethiopia that is reputedly the birthplace of the Arabica plant. Coffee as we know it kicked off in Arabia, where roasted beans were first brewed around A.D. 1000. By the 13th century Muslims were drinking coffee religiously. The “bean broth” drove dervishes into orbit, kept worshippers awake, and splashed over into secular life. And wherever Islam went, coffee went too: North Africa, the eastern Mediterranean, and India.
Arabia made export beans infertile by parching or boiling, and it is said that no coffee seed sprouted outside Africa or Arabia until the 1600s—until Baba Budan. As tradition has it, this Indian pilgrim-cum-smuggler left Mecca with fertile seeds strapped to his belly. Baba’s beans bore fruit and initiated an agricultural expansion that would soon reach Europe’s colonies...
